Thompson to Host Info Session on Becoming a CNA Aug. 15

UR Medicine Thompson Health is hosting an information session at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, for those interested in beginning careers as certified nursing assistants (CNAs).

Thompson covers the entire cost of the five-week CNA training course and pays participants while enrolled, with part-time benefits beginning immediately. Course graduates are guaranteed a CNA position at Thompson’s M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center.

Newly hired CNAs are expected to remain employed – in a full- or part-time position – for at least one year from certification. If they plan to further their education, they are eligible for tuition reimbursement initiatives and grants from Thompson, as well as promotional opportunities.

The one-hour information session will be held at the Continuing Care Center, 350 Parrish Street in Canandaigua. Those planning to attend must first register by emailing

 or calling 585-396-6824.

Yawning

You’re bored.  You are tired.  The room is stuffy.  Someone near you is doing it, too. A great big old Y-A-W-N.

This is one of the great mysteries of science.  Well, there are more important things like finding cancer cures or tracking the next pandemic.  There are no conclusive answers, but it is still interesting to ponder. Read More.

Sirius the Dog Star

Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky.  Its name comes from the Greek Seirios that translates to “scorching” or “glowing”.  Just about right for the Dog Days of August, but more about that later.  Sirius is part of the Alpha Canis Majoris or Big Dog Constellation.  Conversely, in the southern hemisphere, it is winter and this star was used for navigation by the Polynesians.  In Egypt, sighting Sirius meant that it was just about the time the Nile would flood.  Read More.

Hot Dogs

Frankfurter, wiener, weenie; foot long, cocktail, bun length; cooked on an outdoor grill, over an open fire, boiled on top of the stove.  If you were a fan of Big Bang Theory, you will recall that Sheldon favored sliced hot dogs in his plate of spaghetti.   Read more.
