Show Your Support for Thompson’s Heroes

With record patient volumes, ongoing COVID-19 surges and more, UR Medicine Thompson Health staff members are digging deep and providing needed care. But it is not easy.

Many community members – who have been amazingly supportive already - have asked what else they can do to show appreciation. In response, the health system asking that cards be sent to "Thompson’s Heroes" in care of the F.F. Thompson Foundation, 350 Parrish St., Canandaigua, NY 14424.

Thompson Welcomes New Director of Obstetrical Nursing

Shannon McCarthy-Leone of Fairport is the new director of Obstetrical Nursing for F.F. Thompson Hospital. At the hospital, which is part of UR Medicine Thompson Health, McCarthy-Leone oversees the Birthing Center, where more than 700 babies were delivered in 2020.

A graduate of St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center College of Nursing in Syracuse who obtained her bachelor’s of nursing at Keuka College, McCarthy-Leone completed her master’s in nursing education at Keuka in 2013 and received her doctoral degree in education from St. John Fisher College in 2018.

McCarthy-Leone was previously on the nursing faculty at both Keuka College and Finger Lakes Community College. Prior to joining Thompson, she was a perinatal safety specialist with Rochester Regional Health. Her previous nursing experience included positions within Unity Health, Newark-Wayne Community Hospital and the University of Rochester Medical Center.

McCarthy-Leone was named to her new position at Thompson upon the retirement of Deborah Jones, who had served as director of Obstetrical Nursing for 18 years.

Matthew Turner Hired as Assistant Winemaker at Buttonwood Grove Winery

Buttonwood Grove Winery is excited to announce the addition of Matthew Turner to the winemaking team. Matthew has accepted the position of Assistant Winemaker, working alongside Head Winemaker Sue Passmore. A 2018 graduate of the Finger Lakes Community College Viticulture and Enology program, his past experience includes several years at Heron Hill Winery, where he began as a tasting room server in 2013 and moved into production tasks in 2015. After graduating from FLCC, he was employed at Hillick and Hobbs Estate on Seneca Lake, working in vineyard operations during the summers, and spending winters in the wine cellar at Paul Hobbs Winery in California.

Matthew joined the Buttonwood Grove team in 2021 as a harvest intern, and it was quickly apparent that his background and skills were an asset to their rapidly expanding winemaking program. At the end of the intern period, he was offered a permanent position, and will be assisting with all aspects of the winemaking process.

Easy Ways to Lower Blood Pressure

Blood pressure or hypertension is the amount of blood the heart is pumping and the measure of resistance in your arteries. Any numbers lower that 120 over 80 is normal but 130 over 80 is high. The two numbers are the force of pressure through the body (upper number of systolic) and pressure in the blood vessels between beats (bottom or diastolic).

Unusual Holiday Wreaths and Interesting Ways to Display Them

There are upsides and downsides to everything. That includes Christmas wreaths. If you are in a quandary about whether to go artificial or fresh, start with where will it hang. If it will be displayed on an exterior door in a climate that is cool and damp, a fresh wreath will thrive. For indoors, a toasty temperature will mean the fresh wreath won’t stay fresh too long. The needles will fall and the branches become dry and crack. Also if it is hung in a spot that is likely to be jostled, the more delicate the arrangement, the more likely it will suffer from breakage.
