Finger Lakes Connected: Your Weekly Local News and Updates

Finger Lakes Connected | Your Weekly Local News and Updates

Welcome November!

As I am writing this, the election votes are still out and while we wait, we have to remind ourselves how fortunate we are to live in a country with democracy . . . and patience . . . and love. I wish you all a calm restful weekend ahead! At FLC, our initiative has always been to promote local; and connect consumers with local businesses. We cannot emphasize how important it is to shop local always, but especially the rest of this year. Every week I'm going to remind you "Small Business Saturday" is November 28th.

Thompson Health Guild Hosting Pie Sale

The Thompson Health Guild is hosting a pie sale, accepting pre-orders now through Nov. 8. Made by Special Touch Bakery, the 10-inch pies are $16 apiece and there are nine varieties to choose from.Order online here:

Pre-ordered pies may be picked up on Friday, Nov. 20, between 3 and 5 p.m. at the pole barn behind F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua (enter the parking lot via The Thompson Way, a private drive off of West Street). Pick-up will be masked and socially distanced.Fruit pies are delivered frozen and ready to bake (baking instructions included). Cream pies will be delivered frozen (simply thaw and serve).

Free Flu Clinic Set for Thursday, Nov. 19

Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC) and Constellation Brands, Inc. are funding a second free flu clinic on Thursday, Nov. 19, at Gleaners Community Kitchen, located at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 183 N. Main St. in Canandaigua.

Hosted by UR Medicine Thompson Health, the free clinic is for both the uninsured and underinsured, ages 9 and up. It will run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with visitors having a temperature check and quick health screening at the main door.

The standard 2020-2021 vaccine provides protection against four flu viruses, including H3N2 and H1N1. The second option – with limited availability – is for those 65 and older: A high-dose flu vaccine containing additional antigen designed to create a stronger immune response in the person receiving the vaccine. This, too, protects against four flu viruses.

For many years, CMAC has funded free Thompson Health flu clinics with proceeds from concertgoers’ tips collected at its Constellation Brands Ambassador Tent throughout its concert season. Although the pandemic forced CMAC to cancel or reschedule all of the shows lined up for the 2020 season, a combined donation of $3,000 from CMAC and Constellation Brands made possible an Oct. 24 clinic in Canandaigua and this Nov. 19 clinic as well. For more information, call (585) 924-1510.

Fun Fact

: The Finger Lakes were created by Ice Age glaciers, depositing top soil on sloping shale beds above the lakes. This provided drainage crucial for grape growing.
