Guest Speaker to Discuss Aphasia with Stroke Support Group

A New York State-licensed and certified speech and language pathologist will be the guest speaker at the Thursday, Aug. 5, meeting of the regional Stroke Support Group hosted by UR Medicine Thompson Health.

At 1 p.m. in a meeting held via Zoom, Suzanne Johnston will discuss aphasia, defined by the National Aphasia Association (NAA) as “an impairment of language, affecting the production or comprehension of speech and the ability to read or write.” It is due to an injury to the brain, most commonly from a stroke, according to the NAA. Johnston, who holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, facilitates the Aphasia Stroke Support Group that meets at Nazareth College in Rochester.

Thompson’s monthly support group is open to individuals who have experienced a stroke, as well as their loved ones and caregivers. The group facilitator is stroke-certified registered nurse Sarah Gallagher, the stroke coordinator at F.F. Thompson Hospital.

FLXcursion welcomes the wine world back to the Finger Lakes in a return to normalcy.

The International Riesling Expo was held July 17 - 20, 2021 in Geneva, NY.

FLXcursion was held this week at The Smith Opera House in Geneva, NY. The three day symposium brought in wine professionals from around the world to celebrate both a love of Riesling, and a return to normalcy after what has been a hard year for the hospitality industry.

The professional conference covered a range of topics pertinent to the industry. From serious conversations about inclusivity and climate change, to pointed questions about the relevancy of terroir, and even included discussions about the use of memes in wine education and marketing. Each seminar seemed to ask attendees to examine their previously held notions and consider something new as we collectively look towards the future of wine.

New this year, consumers were encouraged to participate with wine dinners held throughout the area, including a Wines of Germany pop-up located within Microclimate wine bar on Linden Street in Geneva, as well as seminars at the Smith Opera House on day one of the conference.

With an overwhelming sense of excitement and community among conference attendees, organizers, and volunteers, it's safe to say that everyone was glad to be gathering again.

FLXcursion was made possible through the collaboration of many Riesling producing countries and regions, including Wines of Austria, Wines of Germany, Washington State Wine Commission, the Finger Lakes Wine Alliance, the New York Wine & Grape Foundation and a collaboration of Australian Wineries.

Tokyo Olympics

At long last the Summer Olympics will be held in Tokyo, Japan from July 23 to August 8, 2021. Due to health concerns, it will be held without spectators. This is not the first time Tokyo was chosen as the host city for the summer Olympics, and certainly not the first to deal with “glitches”.

Children's Temper Tantrums

Children between the ages of 1 and 2 can be very difficult, especially the “terrible twos” where it seems the only word they know is “no”. This is a normal part of the development process where the child is beginning to make their own decisions combined with an underdeveloped communication ability.

Baby Cheesecakes Recipe

Cheesecakes have been around since ancient Greece. It was adopted by the Romans and as they conquered Europe, cheesecakes came along for the ride. In 1929 Arnold Reuben served the dessert in his restaurant Turf and the New York style cheesecake was introduced to the world. In 2021, national cheesecake day is celebrated on July 30. It is unknown how or when this event was first introduced, but it is certainly a good excuse to enjoy this tasty dessert.
