Stroke Support Group to Discuss ‘Creating Adaptive Adventures’

The executive director of a nonprofit organization that works to make recreation, sports and tourism opportunities more accessible will be the guest speaker at the Thursday, July 1, meeting of the regional Stroke Support Group hosted by UR Medicine Thompson Health.

Anita O’Brien, MA, is a certified therapeutic recreation specialist who – in addition to being its executive director – helped found Rochester Accessible Adventures in 2015. Her presentation to the Stroke Support Group is called “Creating Adaptive Adventures,” with the group meeting to be held via Zoom, beginning at 1 p.m.

This support group is open to individuals who have experienced a stroke, as well as their loved ones and caregivers. The group facilitator is stroke-certified registered nurse Sarah Gallagher, the stroke coordinator at F.F. Thompson Hospital. To sign up for the July 1 meeting, email [email protected]. Thompson VP Receives Award for Diversity, Inclusion

UR Medicine Thompson Health Vice President of Long-Term Care Amy Daly recently received the Sister Joan Cassidy Award for Diversity and Inclusion from the American College of Health Care Administrators (ACHCA).

Daly heads the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center, Thompson’s skilled-nursing facility in Canandaigua. She accepted the award on June 8 at an ACHCA conference in Monticello, NY, where she was recognized for pulling together several departments within the health system to make it possible for an associate with physical limitations to reach their full potential in their role.

“It is always wonderful to be recognized by our peers,” Daly said, “but truly, the reward came when we stepped outside of our boxes, brought cross-functional teams together, working for the greater good to hire the right person who would go on to change lives for the better. That is the essence of success in long-term care.”

At the award ceremony, the ACHCA also cited Thompson’s repeated designations from the Human Rights Campaign Foundation as a “LGBTQ Health Care Equality Leader,” its Safe Space training program in support LGBTQ associates and customers, and its participation in the United Way of Greater Rochester’s 21-day Racial Equity Challenge in 2020, to foster discussions about racial equality at work.

How to Choose a Water Feature for Your Yard

There is nothing like sitting back in a favorite chair, closing your eyes, and letting the sound of moving water take you away. Homeowners who live next to rivers, lakes, and the ocean have that luxury naturally. But if you live in a landlocked home, adding a water feature can provide a similar relaxing experience.

Sweet Potato Sponge Cake

I don’t usually love sponge cakes, because they’re often a little dry for me. So when I wanted to make my own recipe, I needed to do something different. For this one, I use sweet potatoes the way some bakers use applesauce—the potatoes add tons of moisture but not much flavor (they do add a little color, though, which is fun). The result is so good that I ended up formulating it to make two at a time because it always goes so fast. To serve them, I just sprinkle them with a little powdered sugar before I put them out.
