  • Local Dairy Farms Share in $21.6M in State Grants (Finger Lakes Daily News, June 5, 2025) – New York’s dairy modernization grants program recently awarded $21.6 million to 103 farms statewide. Of that, 20 farms in the Finger Lakes region (including Ontario County) will share about $4.3 million to improve their operations. The funding is intended to help these farms purchase equipment and make upgrades that boost efficiency and sustainability, supporting the local agricultural economy.

  • Land Trust Launches Hemlock-to-High-Tor Conservation Initiative (Finger Lakes Daily News, June 5, 2025) – The Finger Lakes Land Trust secured a $100,000 state grant to launch the “Hemlock to High Tor Initiative,” a long-term conservation effort spanning 114,000 acres from Hemlock Lake to Naples High Tor in Ontario and surrounding counties. This project will focus on protecting one of the region’s largest contiguous forest areas—preserving water quality, preventing land loss, and boosting outdoor recreation tourism. The Land Trust has already conserved over 2,300 acres here through preserves and easements, and aims to build on that momentum with this new funding.

  • ONYA’s “Bud to Bloom” Luncheon Marks 25th Year (Finger Lakes Daily News, June 1, 2025) – The Onondaga Nation Youth & Athletics (ONYA) annual “Bud to Bloom” luncheon celebrates and raises funds for women’s advancement in Ontario and Yates Counties. The 25th anniversary event is set for June 7 in Geneva, and Dr. Anne Killen of the Northeast College of Health Sciences will deliver the keynote address. All proceeds support ONYA grants and programming for women and girls. This milestone celebration underscores the Finger Lakes community’s commitment to empowerment and education.

  • Finger Lakes Health Nursing Honor Society Inductees (Finger Lakes Daily News, May 30, 2025) – Finger Lakes Health’s College of Nursing & Health Sciences (in Geneva) announced its newest inductees into the Alpha Delta Nu Nursing Honor Society. A pinning ceremony honored several top students (listed by name and hometown) who achieved high academic standing. This recognition highlights local student achievement and the college’s role in training the next generation of healthcare professionals in the Finger Lakes region.

  • 4-H Outdoor Skills Workshops for Youth (Finger Lakes Daily News, May 30, 2025) – Cayuga County 4-H is offering a free four-part workshop series on outdoor nature skills for youths age 9 and up, to be held in Auburn and neighboring Waterloo. Topics include hiking safety, camping basics, and wildlife identification. The classes will teach children how to safely enjoy and respect nature, promoting community engagement with the outdoors. By joining this program, local youth get hands-on learning and 4-H membership opportunities, strengthening community ties and encouraging healthy activities.

  • Newark Community Pride Day Cleanup (Finger Lakes Daily News, May 30, 2025) – Newark residents and volunteers gathered on May 17 for the village’s 19th Annual Community Pride Day, a neighborhood beautification initiative. Participants cleaned parks, pulled weeds, and planted flowers across downtown Newark. The event included a friendly contest for best floral displays, with prizes for the “most colorful flowers” in homes and businesses. Community Pride Day highlights the upbeat community spirit of Newark, as neighbors work together to make their streets greener and more welcoming.

  • DEC “Learn to Fish” Event in Elbridge (Finger Lakes Daily News, June 5, 2025) – The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) partnered with Onondaga County Parks to host a free “Learn to Fish” event this weekend in Elbridge. The family-friendly session (on Saturday at Carpenter’s Brook) offers beginners of all ages a chance to fish with guidance from experts. Events like this encourage community involvement in outdoor recreation and provide a fun, educational outing for local families.

  • Ithaca Festival Draws Summer Crowds (Ithaca Voice, June 2, 2025) – The annual Ithaca Festival brought large crowds to downtown Ithaca over the June weekend despite some rain. Attendees enjoyed live music performances in the Commons and along Cayuga Street, plus local food and art vendors. DJ sets, walking tours, and blocked-off street festivals made the community celebration lively. This family-friendly event showcased the region’s arts and culture, marking the beginning of summer with positive community energy.

Wine News

  • N.Y. lawmakers push to allow wine sales in supermarkets (FingerLakes1.com, May 29, 2025): New York legislators made a last-ditch effort to modernize state alcohol laws by amending a bill to permit wine sales in large grocery stores. The updated proposal focuses on in-state wines and would even offer tax incentives for stores that stock New York-grown wine. The FingerLakes1 article (citing Spectrum News) explains this change and other reforms (like allowing snacks in liquor stores) as part of a broader push to support local wineries.

  • Scenic “wine train” tours to launch this summer (FingerLakes1.com, May 29, 2025): A new heritage rail experience is coming to the Finger Lakes, with weekend excursions on restored 1940s passenger cars from July 4 through August. Departing from Geneva, Canandaigua and Seneca Falls, the trips will offer family-friendly rides, brunch trains, and adults-only wine tasting tours. Backed by Finger Lakes Railway and a coalition of local wineries and nonprofits, the program aims to boost tourism and preserve vintage rail travel charm.

  • Ventosa Vineyards revives “Sunset & Wine” evenings (FingerLakes1.com, May 29, 2025): Ventosa Vineyards in Geneva announced it will extend its hours on Monday and Tuesday nights (June 2 – Aug 26) for a sunset-themed wine event. The winery will offer extended tastings, live accordion music, and $5 wine bottles (with food purchase) on the lakeside terrace at sunset. This summer series is designed to let guests “linger longer” and enjoy wine, food and lake views on warm evenings.

  • Three Brothers Wineries hosts full-day Father’s Day bash (FingerLakes1.com, May 29, 2025): The Geneva-based Three Brothers Wineries & Estates is throwing a “Dad’s Day” celebration on June 15. The festivities (11 a.m.–6 p.m.) will include live music, beer-mosa cocktails, hot sauce and Bloody Mary mix tastings, a “Dress Like Your Dad” contest (prize: $100 gift card), and services like a barber offering free shaves. Proceeds benefit a veterans’ charity, and local food vendors and activities for kids (lemonade, ice cream floats) will be featured.

From Our Blog:

Changing Sleep Habits

Sleep is a vital element of our daily lives.  The CDC recommends:

  • Ages 13 to 18 – 8 to 10 hours every 24

  • Ages 61 to 64 – 7 to 9 hours

  • Over 65 – 7 to 8 hours

As you can tell, our needs vary through the aging process, but don’t believe that you need less sleep as you get older.  The needs are consistent throughout adulthood.  However, sleep studies show that older adults spend less time in deep REM and their circadian rhythm will change over the years..
