Finger Lakes Wines and Grapes: Harvesting and history
Chris Scholomiti Special to The Citizen
Spring has arrived, yet it may be too early to say it was a mild winter, since the biggest snow event we had was on March 14. That brings back memories of the monster snowstorm of March 1993, which buried us with over 40 inches of snow in Fosterville!
Even though we have had minimal snow this winter, we have received a fair amount of rain, so I’m thinking the water table should be in good shape for the upcoming growing season. I’ve been sampling the buds in the vineyard looking for winter subzero damage after that minus 7 degrees Fahrenheit we experienced back on Feb. 4. Recent data from the Finger Lakes Grape Program suggests several varieties such as Cayuga white, gewürztraminer, sauvignon blanc and merlot will be impacted from the Feb. 4 subzero episode. Possible damage to cabernet franc, Lemberger and chardonnay also happen to these types to a lesser extent. The CJS riesling, chambourcin and Cayuga white buds in the Fosterville vineyard look good!

Rosé wine is an ideal option for Easter dinner due to its refreshing and light flavor, making it a perfect match for a variety of dishes. A dry rosé can complement traditional Easter meats like ham, turkey, and lamb as it has enough acidity to cut through the richness of these dishes. For the main course, a glass of dry rosé pairs well with roasted leg of lamb or honey and mustard glazed ham, enhancing the natural flavors of the meat. Rosé wine also complements side dishes such as grilled vegetables like asparagus and zucchini, as well as acidic or tangy dishes like potato salad with vinegar dressing. In summary, a glass of rosé wine brings versatility and elegance to Easter dinner, enhancing the flavors of the meal and adding sophistication to the celebration. Available at the tasting room or order online.Miles Wine CellarsAddress: 168 Randall Crossing Rd Himrod, NY 14842 Phone: (607) 243-7742.

Don’t forget to grab some Ethereal Sparkling Wine for your Easter Celebration or brunch. This crowd pleaser is lovely on its own, and also makes great Mimosas and cocktails with other fruit juices. Ethereal and our other wines are available in the Prejean Winery Tasting Room and on-line at https://prejeanwinery.com/wineshop
We are currently offering FREE SHIPPING on cases of wine (any 12 bottles).
Wishing all a Happy Easter and Passover!
Open daily 10am to 5:00 pm

Hearing Aids
“WHAT?” “HUH?” “Mom, would you please turn down the volume on the tv?” These are fairly common statements when dealing with hearing loss. While it is an annoyance for family members and friends, it is no picnic for the person who has lost some hearing. Often people will withdraw from social events or from dining out. Some hearing loss can be resolved easily, some will require an aid, and some loss will not be resolved, but the individual must learn to cope with the less distinct sounds for the rest of their life. Growing Asparagus
Asparagus is a perennial vegetable in the lily family, the same as onions, leeks, garlic and other aromatics. Sometimes the group is referred to as “stinking lilies”. White asparagus is the same vegetable only it has been deprived of sun so that the plant does not manufacture chlorophyll, which is the process that turns a plant green. Read more.

Meals with Asparagus
For many people asparagus is a favorite springtime vegetable. Preparations are versatile since it can be steamed, roasted, grilled or broiled. It can even be dried or pickled. It will pair well with nutmeg, and honey and lemon juice will give it some sparkle. If you like to use herbs try rosemary, basil, dill, Mediterranean oregano, or cilantro. Read More.
