Tree Lighting to Benefit Thompson Health Guild

This holiday season, the Thompson Health Guild’s Tree of Lights will once again be featured prominently in front of UR Medicine Thompson Health’s skilled-nursing facility, the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center on Parrish Street in Canandaigua.

Each year, community members may sponsor lights on the tree, in memory of or in honor of loved ones. Proceeds benefit the programs and initiatives funded by the Guild, which was established to help the health system invest in advanced medical equipment as well as in its staff.

Lights are a minimum donation of $8 each. The tree will be lit on Monday, December 5. Written acknowledgments are sent to those honored or to the families of those memorialized.

To sponsor a light, visit

. For more information, call (585) 396-6155.

New Director of Case Management/Social Work for Thompson

Sarah E. Rehler of Honeoye Falls was recently named the director of Case Management/Social Work for UR Medicine Thompson Health.

Rehler obtained a Master in Social Work from the University of Michigan School of Social Work and is licensed by New York State as a Master Social Worker. Having worked for the Cattaraugus County Department of Community Services, Rehler joined Strong Memorial Hospital as a medical/social worker in 2010, working first on an adult acute medicine unit and later on an inpatient palliative care and hospice unit. She then served as senior social worker for the palliative care unit and, from 2019 through this past summer, served as its manager.

At Thompson, Rehler is overseeing a team of 13 social workers and case managers who help patients and families throughout the 113-bed F.F. Thompson Hospital.

“We are incredibly happy to have Sarah join the Thompson Health family,” said Vice President of Patient Care Services/Chief Nursing Officer Hazel Robertshaw. “Her years of  experience, her leadership skills, and her dedication to patients make her an ideal person to head this vital department within our hospital and we all look forward to working with her for many years to come.”

In 1867, something unexpected happened: a New York wine received an honorable mention at the Exposition Universelle in Paris–a first for American sparkling. The wine? A Méthode Champenoise bottling of Catawba grapes by Pleasant Valley Wine Company, Bonded Winery No. 1 in the state. Founded in 1860 on land where the terroir is reminiscent of Champagne, France, the winery secured Gold in Vienna and quickly became known as Great Western, a nickname after earning the tagline “the Great Champagne of the Western World.”

The winery, still in operation today, is a fixture in Finger Lakes history and a reminder the region has been making wines worthy of the world’s stage since the beginning. Year after year reinvention persists, quality heightens, and new bottles bubble to the surface to help drive regional progress. Here’s a peek at four to try right now...

Time to Get a New Couch

A couch or sofa is an integral part of almost any living room, great room, or den.  It is a respite at the end of a long day or gathering point for family and friends. Unfortunately their lifespan ranges from seven to fifteen years. Read More.

Kids and the Holidays

Halloween is over and hopefully the kids that were hyped up on candy treats have settled back to a routine.  But don’t get too comfortable.  Right around the corner is Thanksgiving.  Then comes Christmas and Hanukkah.  Add to that end of term at school with tests and projects, pagents and recitals.  Possibly travel is in the works.  There are parties to attend and people to visit.  All of this is enough to make the adults crazy, not to mention trying to keep your children on an even keel. Read More.

Non-Traditional Thanksgiving Extras

There is no doubt that the stars of Thanksgiving dinner are the turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, and various desserts.  However, if you are bored with the usual veg and dip, green bean casserole, and other standards, here are a few less common choices. Read More.
