New Director of Practice Management for Thompson
Karina Anderson of Pittsford has accepted the role of Director of Practice Management for UR Medicine Thompson Health effective Dec. 4.

Karina Anderson
Anderson holds a bachelor’s in Business Administration from Colorado Mountain College and a master’s in Leadership in Health Care Systems from the University of Rochester. She first joined UR Medicine ten years ago, serving as manager of OB/GYN, the Perinatal Center, the Nursery and OB Education for Highland Hospital in Rochester. In 2017, Anderson came to Thompson as its patient access manager. Most recently, she has served as a per diem IT Analyst in Thompson’s Consolidated Business Office while working as the full-time operations manager for Highland Hospital’s Highland Family Medicine.
In her new role with Thompson, she will oversee 13 primary care practices spread out over a three-county area. She will assist the health system with continuing to grow its primary care base, which currently encompasses approximately 62,000 patients and is the largest primary care network in the Finger Lakes. Next year, Thompson primary care practices will be transitioning to a new electronic health record system, with Anderson at the helm.

Thompson Now a Center of Excellence for Minimally Invasive Surgery
Already designated by Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) as a Center of Excellence for both Hernia Surgery and Robotic Surgery, Thompson Hospital recently received a new SRC distinction: Center of Excellence for Minimally Invasive Surgery.
“We are thrilled for our surgeons and for our patients. This achievement is a reflection of the commitment on the part of our surgeons to continually elevate their skills, enhancing the surgical options available to our community,” said Thompson Health Executive Vice President/COO Kurt Koczent. He noted many of the options involve the hospital’s state-of-the-art da Vinci Xi robot. Acquired in 2020 to replace an older model that had been in use for many years, it offers surgeons enhanced imaging and intricate manipulation of the patient’s surgical site via a remote console adjacent to the operating table.
Based in Raleigh, N.C., SRC is a nonprofit, patient safety organization that provides accreditations for surgical facilities and medical professionals. The new accreditation it recently awarded to Thompson lasts through 2026. It followed a rigorous inspection. At the same time as the hospital received the designation, three surgeons – Drs. A David Peter, Andrew Powers, and Joseph Talarico – were each recognized by SRC to be Surgeons of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Surgery. Dr. Peter and Dr. Talarico are both designated as SRC Master Surgeons.
Earlier this year, both the Robotic Surgery and Hernia Surgery programs at Thompson received re-accreditation from SRC following a deficiency-free survey.

November Flowers
Chrysanthemum is the flower designated for those born in November. Its name, like so many others, comes from the Greek for chrysos and anthemon, or gold flower and is part of the Asteraceae family. Read More.

Exercising and the Holidays
It is hard to deny that from the end of November through the end of December is one of the busiest times of the year. In addition to a number of holidays, businesses are making a final push for year end, wrapping up the books, and planning for the next year. Volunteer organizations often have election of officers and are asking for help. There are parties all over the place. It seems impossible to carve out any time to go to the gym or that special room in your home where you have a stationary bike, treadmill, or other devices. Many people prefer to avoid outdoor running in the cold, dark, and on potentially slick streets or paths. Read more.

Autumn Cakes
Now that the heat of summer is over, it is time to resume using your oven. With all of the holiday events, if you are on dessert duty, think about some seasonal cakes. Read More.
