Thompson Community Flu Clinics Continue

UR Medicine Thompson Health has scheduled a number of community flu clinics in the region, and five of them are still coming up.

Administered to those 9 and older at these clinics, the standard 2024-2025 vaccine provides protection against three flu virus strains. There also is a high-dose flu vaccine for those 65 and older. This contains additional antigen designed to create a stronger immune response for the recipient.

The schedule of remaining clinics is as follows:

  • Canandaigua Urgent Care, 699 S. Main St., Tuesday, Oct. 15, 3-7 p.m.

  • Farmington Urgent Care, 1160 Corporate Drive, Wednesday, Oct. 16, 3-7 p.m.

  • Bloomfield Veterans Park, 6910 Routes 5 & 20, Tuesday, Oct. 22, 3-6 p.m.

  • Naples Ambulance, 199 N. Main St., Tuesday, Oct. 29, 3-6 p.m.

The flu shots are free to patients with insurance (patients must present an insurance card at the time of the visit). The self-pay cost for those without insurance is $45, and $80 for the high-dose vaccine (cash, check, MasterCard, or Visa).  Visit

or call 585-924-1510 for more information.

Thompson Health Guild Hosting Pie Sale

The Thompson Health Guild is accepting orders now through Oct. 28 for their annual pie sale fundraiser.

Made by Special Touch Bakery in Rochester, the 10-inch pies are either $20 or $25 each depending on variety. There are eight varieties to choose from: Cannoli, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Pecan, Bumbleberry, Apple Crumb, Pumpkin, Chocolate Mousse, and Cherry. For details and to order online, visit

.

Pre-ordered pies may be picked up on Tuesday, Nov. 12, between 3 and 6 p.m. at the pole barn behind F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua (enter the parking lot via The Thompson Way, a private drive off West Street). Fruit pies will be frozen and ready to bake (baking instructions included). Cream pies will be frozen; simply thaw and serve.

Proceeds will benefit the Guild, which is the auxiliary for UR Medicine Thompson Health. The non-profit fundraising organization is governed by a volunteer board of directors. The funds raised by the Guild help the nonprofit health system expand its facilities, purchase needed equipment, and offer helpful programs for patients, senior living residents, staff, and community members.

From Vineyard to Glass: Inside New York’s ‘Epic’ 2024 Harvest Written by Kathleen Willcox and Robin Shreeves

  ARTICLE

There’s no life like the wine life during the harvest season—especially one as auspicious as 2024’s appears to be.

From the Hudson Valley to the tip of Long Island, up to the Finger Lakes and through the Niagara Escarpment to Lake Ontario, growers and winemakers found no rest, but plenty to look forward to in this harvest, a relief after a few challenging harvests characterized in many regions by early bud breaks, late-season spring frosts, heavy rain and lower yields.

John Wagner, owner at Wagner Vineyards in the Finger Lakes, says that this year feels like a return to normalcy.

“Following a small harvest in 2022 due to drier, droughty conditions and then, obviously, our short crop last year due to the spring frost, we’ve bounced back with a more typical yield this year,” We’re closer to our 10-year average quantity-wise. Early Growing Degree Days accumulated quite rapidly this year, so we got a lot of heat units. We’re running the whole growing season a couple of weeks ahead of typical ripening dates. Fruit continues to remain pretty clean, so we’re rewarded with longer hang times and really nice flavor development.”  Read More.

Stress Eating

We have all had “one of those days,” or weeks, or months. Nothing seems to go right; people are crabby; traffic is horrid; trouble with your significant other, on and on. What to do? Open the freezer and haul out the gallon of Rocky Road and a big spoon. Or, maybe raid the cabinets for chips or cookies.  Read More.

Garlic

Garlic has been around for millenia. The pharaohs ordered it for those poor souls building the pyramids so that they would remain healthy and strong enough to work.  The Greeks thought it could cure almost anything.  It was a staple during the European Great Plague thought to ward off the illness.  As late as WWI its juice was used in lieu of bandages.  We all know it is used to protect from evil vampires!  Read More.

Indigenous Peoples Day Menu

Monday, October 14, is a federal holiday.  Banks will be closed and no mail delivery.  In 2021 the President combined Columbus Day with a new title of Indigenous Peoples Day.  Here are some food ideas along that same theme. Read more.
