The weather through September was up and down, with an official heat wave around Labor Day, then a cooler period with clouds and rain. By month's end the weather was perfect, drier with lots of sun and lower humidity, which is really good for late-season grapes. With the better weather we were able to leave some early ripening grapes (pinot noir, Cayuga white) on the vine longer. As the grapes ripen the sugar level increases and the acid decreases, which winemakers like. As the season progresses, we will schedule picking the riesling, then the chambourcin and lastly the cabernet franc. Interestingly, we had a slightly reduced yield in our Cayuga white of about 10%, but in the same vineyard we had an increase in a red French-American hybrid of about 25%. Grape growing can be a puzzle at times.

Season Changes and Your Pet
Everyone can feel the change in the air as we move from season to season. You should realize that this also affects our pets. You may notice that they are slowing down a bit and putting on a more fat, reminiscent of their wild forebearers, to withstand the colder temperatures looming. There are a few things we can do to ensure continued safety and happiness. Read more.

Air Fryer Apple and Pear Desserts
What better way to use your air fryer than to take advantage of two of the best fall fruits, the apple and pear. There are a wide variety of apples to choose from depending on your preference for tart, sweet, crisp, or soft, although the firmer apples will hold up to baking better. Choose apples that have a good color and feel firm to the touch. Keep them in the refrigerator to maintain texture and taste. Opt for those with a nice scent. Read More.
