October 18 Information Session for Those Interested in Becoming ‘Compassion Partners’ at ThompsonUR Medicine Thompson Health’s manager of Spiritual Care is hosting an informational meeting on Tuesday, October 18 for community members who are interested in volunteering as “compassion partners” within F.F. Thompson Hospital and the adjacent M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center. The Rev. Janice D. Lum will hold the meeting in the Thompson Conference Center on the ground floor of F.F. Thompson Hospital, 350 Parrish Street in Canandaigua, beginning at 11 a.m. Those attending are asked to use the main entrance to the hospital; masks are required.Lum said compassion partners are an important component of Thompson’s volunteer program, offering “companionship, compassion, and conversation to our patients and residents.” She noted Thompson’s Spiritual Care Department believes spirituality can be valuable “in times of crisis, thanksgiving, and celebration as well as during transitions.” The department also recognizes that each person is unique in their beliefs, she said, and seeks to honor those differences.Those interested in attending the October 18 information session are asked to RSVP to [email protected].Lum noted volunteers within Thompson are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Those who serve as compassion partners within the Continuing Care Center must have received a bivalent booster targeting the most recent dominant subvariants of the coronavirus. Thompson Health Guild Hosting Pie Sale

The Thompson Health Guild is accepting orders now through November 2 for their annual pie sale fundraiser.Made by Special Touch Bakery in Rochester, the 10-inch pies are either $20 or $25 each depending on variety. There are 11 varieties to choose from, including Cannoli, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Pumpkin, Strawberry Rhubarb, and others. For details and to order online, visit 

.Pre-ordered pies may be picked up on Thursday, November 17, between 4 and 6 p.m. at the pole barn behind F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua (enter the parking lot via The Thompson Way, a private drive off West Street). Fruit pies will be frozen and ready to bake (baking instructions included). Cream pies will be frozen; simply thaw and serve.

Proceeds will benefit the Guild, which is the auxiliary for UR Medicine Thompson Health. The funds raised by the Guild help the nonprofit health system expand its facilities, purchase needed equipment, and offer helpful programs for patients, senior living residents, staff, and community members.For more information about the pie sale, email Lou Loy at [email protected].

The region has long been known for reliable Rieslings—but on a recent trip north, our columnist found there are still unexpected delights to discover.  

WHEN THE WINE LOVERS I know discuss the Finger Lakes region of New York, two topics invariably arise: the Riesling grape and the long drive north.

It takes about five hours to drive from New York City to the Finger Lakes, southwest of Syracuse. While other grapes have long been planted in this land of rolling hills and stunning views, Riesling is the unquestioned star. Of late, some winemakers have delved even deeper into the varietal, turning out single-vineyard wines from sites they deem worthy. These wines were some of the most memorable discoveries I made on a visit to the region last month. Read More

Back in 1810 then Prince Ludwig of Bavaria married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. To celebrate, all the citizens were invited to party in a field in front of the city gates. This field was renamed Theresienwiese or Theresa’s Meadow and still retains that name today. Read More.

Octoberfest is generally somewhere between 16 and 18 days long, but don’t be controlled by the calendar. Anytime this month is good to celebrate.

If you want to go simple, take some thinly sliced pork cutlets and bread them. Shallow fry in a skillet on your stovetop and call it schnitzel. Prepare a side of braised red cabbage and dig in. If you want to be more complex, here are a number of recipes to consider. Read More.
