Local Doctor Determined to Get More Patients Vaccinated

In a Partners in Health and Wellness magazine article featuring a photo of him receiving his first COVID-19 vaccine dose last December, Dr. Robert L. Smith of Finger Lakes Family Care in Canandaigua  discusses vaccines, social responsibility and the burden on healthcare workers. Dr. Smith, the chief of the Department of Outpatient Medicine for F.F. Thompson Hospital, says it is easier to get patients to quit smoking than it is to convince some to get the vaccine but he is determined to keep trying. To find out why, click here:

We tasted nearly 100 New York wines in New York and Hong Kong this year, and this report includes more than 250 ratings from the last three years of tasting New York state wines. They are just the tip of a beautiful iceberg, and left us charged up to continue exploring what this state is doing. All but one of the wines was from the Finger Lakes and New York’s other iconic growing region, the consummately maritime Long Island, where slightly warmer weather is contributing to the greater finesse and concentration we see.

This week's pic comes from Buttonwood Grove Winery. "Gewürztraminer is by far one of the prettiest grapes in the vineyard, and one of the more unique wines found here in the Finger Lakes (and one of the most fun to pronounce!). Did you know that "Gewürz" means "spice" in German? It's no surprise, then, that the resulting wines can show flavors of ginger and allspice in addition to strong floral and lychee notes. Look at all that gorgeous juice just waiting to be turned into the 2021 vintage of Gewürztraminer!"

Pink Noise

Most of us are familiar with white noise, that hum usually in office environments.  White noise is sort of like a whirring fan noise or static.  Pink noise is similar in that it is a constant sound in the background but the pitch doesn’t vary.  So, it is a consistent frequency that is more flat sounding.  It is also called ambient noise and is recommended to give you a better night’s sleep.

Plant Now for Spring

Plant your spring-flowering bulbs any time from late September through November.  Fertilize spring-flowering bulbs when you plant them.  Dig a hole about two or three times as deep as the bulb is wide as measured from the bottom of the bulb to the top of the bed.  That means smaller bulbs will be planted more shallow.  Space larger bulbs about 4 or 6 inches apart and smaller ones about 1 or 2 inches from each other.  By planting in clumps or irregular groupings, you will have a more pleasant display in the spring. Read More.

Black Beans and Rice

We can thank our friends in South America for one of the more popular dishes around, black beans and rice.  It is an inexpensive source of energy, iron and protein.  The beans are higher in protein and the rice has greater iron, so when you combine the foods you end up with a complete protein that provides the amino acids the human body cannot produce on its own.
