Canario Joins Thompson Health Primary Care TeamDr. José Canario recently joined The Mary Clark Thompson Family Practice, an affiliate of F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua.Dr. José CanarioBoard-certified in Family Medicine, Dr. Canario is a Geneva resident who graduated from the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va., completing his family medicine residency at UR Medicine’s Highland Hospital. He later obtained a master’s in medical management from the University of Rochester’s Simon School of Business. From 2016 through March of this year, Dr. Canario served as chief medical officer for the Penn Yan-based Finger Lakes Community Health. He previously treated patients at a family practice in Penn Yan and also served as medical director of both the Keuka College Health Center and the urgent care centers operated by FLH Medical, PC, in Geneva, Clifton Springs, and Seneca Falls.Dr. Canario treats both children and adults at The Mary Clark Thompson Family Practice, which is located at the Sands Family YMCA, 351 North St. in Canandaigua. To become a patient, call 585-975-5125. For information about other practices within Thompson’s network, visit www.ThompsonHealth.com/PrimaryCare.   Thompson Raises Flag to Raise Awareness of Organ DonationUR Medicine Thompson Health and the nonprofit organization Donate Life New York State are teaming up to raise awareness of the lifesaving impact made by organ, eye, and tissue donors.Earlier this month, Thompson staff members raised a Donate Life flag on the flag pole just outside the Constellation Center for Health and Healing at F.F. Thompson Hospital. The flag will remain through April 30. The goal is to encourage members of the community to consider enrolling in the New York State Donate Life Registry. While more than 3,000 lifesaving organ transplants were performed in state last year, nearly 8,500 New Yorkers remain on the national organ transplant waitlist. In 2021, 465 patients awaiting an organ transplant in New York State died because the organ needed to save their lives was not donated in time. A single organ donor can save up to eight lives, while tissue and cornea donors can improve more than 75 lives.“Thompson has a long history of supporting organ, eye, and tissue donation through our partnership with our regional organ procurement organization and the multidisciplinary team of associates who dedicate time to the Donate Life Workgroup,” said ICU/Observation Nursing Director Mary Kate Corey who oversees the Donate Life Workgroup at Thompson. “This workgroup meets throughout the year to review data, update policies and procedures, ensure compliance with best practices, and educate associates.”Seven million New Yorkers have already enrolled in the New York State Donate Life Registry, the state’s electronic database that documents a person’s authorization to be an organ, eye, and/or tissue donor upon their death. You can enroll online in minutes by visiting https://donatelife.ny.gov/

How to Find a Mentor

There are many opportunities for kids, tweens, teens, and young adults to find mentors. There are coaches, school counselors, teachers, clubs, church groups, and so on. For adults, it becomes more difficult to find someone who will give you tips or just listen to your plans, especially if you are changing careers or re-entering the market after a break. Read More.

Spring Decorating Ideas

We have come through the spring equinox, Holi, Purim, Easter, and are almost at Eid-al-Fitr. Spring cleaning is over and that means it is time for freshening up the inside and outside with some new décor. Read more.

Spring Salads

Vegetables are not quite in full swing, but we are seeing lots of greens. Young and tender, these make wonderful salads that can accompany a meal or be the entire feast in itself. If you read to the end, you will even see how a “weed” can be tasty. Hint, if you draw from your own yard, be sure to wash the greens thoroughly since they can have been “visited” by some animals. Read More.
