Thompson Presents Hospital Nurse with DAISY

Known for her ability to connect with patients who have been hospitalized for extended periods of time, Megan Gray of Geneva received the DAISY Award for Nursing Excellence from UR Medicine Thompson Health nursing leadership on April 8.

Megan Gray

A registered nurse, Gray works on floor 2 West at Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua. A fellow nurse nominated her, citing her connection with a long-term hospital patient who required a little extra attention and TLC. “She spent time talking with them to hear their complaints and feelings and helped them process the difficult decisions and thoughts they were dealing with. She also spent this time with the patient’s significant other,” the nomination said.

According to the nomination, Gray enlisted other hospital associates to color pictures for the patient and even brought in a small Christmas tree, complete with ornaments. “These little acts of kindness are prime examples of what an amazing nurse she is to all her patients,” wrote the nominator, who was on hand for the surprise award presentation and noted the patient’s family expressed gratitude for the impact Gray had.

Gray received a certificate, a pin, and a hand-carved sculpture called

A Healer’s Touch

. As a DAISY recipient, she is also eligible for scholarships, discounts on certifications, and medical mission grants from The DAISY Foundation.

Thompson’s quarterly DAISY award is part of a nationwide nurse recognition program. To nominate a nurse to be the next recipient, visit

Five Receive Thompson’s Service Excellence Award

UR Medicine Thompson Health recently named five of its associates as first-quarter 2025 Service Excellence Award winners.

Recipients of the quarterly award are chosen by the health system’s Service Excellence Team (SET), which reviews compliments from patients, families, and coworkers submitted by system leaders.

Chosen for the honor by the SET were:

  • Certified Nursing Assistant Melissa Thran of the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center, for ensuring all 40 residents on her unit receive Christmas stockings filled with goodies. “Melissa looks at the residents as an extension of her family and treats them all as if they were her loved ones,” said a colleague. Thran is a Clifton Springs resident.

  • Patient Care Technician Arlana Rodriguez of hospital floor 3 West, for comforting a patient having a challenging night. “Arlana’s bubbly personality and unwavering kindness make a meaningful difference for our patients daily,” a coworker wrote. Rodriguez is a Rochester resident.

  • Patient Care Technician Leah Galens of hospital floor 3 West, for helping ensure a patient received exceptional care. “We appreciated the energy and willingness to make sure he was well taken care of,” a family member of the man wrote. Galens lives in Dundee.

  • Patient Care Technician Kali Ham from Interventional Radiology, who was asked to help in the hospital’s Birthing Center and noticed a car seat’s expiration sticker. Said a colleague, “This could have been a huge safety risk and concern if the patient used it. She saved the day and kept baby safe!” Ham is a Canandaigua resident.

  • M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center Recreational Therapy Manager Tawny Kelledy, for facilitating the return of the holiday meals and coordinating a tree lighting ceremony.  “Tawny dedicates all her energy, compassion, and genuine care to her residents, going above and beyond just doing her job,” a coworker wrote. Kelledy lives in Canandaigua.

Each recipient of the Service Excellence Award receives points to be used on Thompson’s online shopping site and is featured in CEO presentations as well as on Thompson’s intranet site and in its internal newsletter.

Hummingbirds

April is generally the month when we see the return of the hummingbird population.  Although five species have been documented in the Finger Lakes area, four are rarely sighted.  That leaves us with the ruby-throated hummingbird.  Their name comes from the prominent red patch on the male's throat.  That spot takes its irridescence from light refracting on the feathers.  So, if it is an overcast day, the spot may look like just a dark or even black spot  Read More.

Planning a Staycation?

Even if you are planning a getaway some time this year, there are lots of holidays and opportunities to add an extra day or two and create a mini vacay or staycation.  This can also be used as a jumping off point to reconnect with friends or family, spend some quality time with children, or just allocate some self care. Read More.

Raspberries

The raspberry is a member of the rose family and are a great source of Vitamin C.  They are a perennial bush with woody stems that can yield several hundred berries each year.  When you harvest a raspberry, the stem of the fruit will stay on the bush, as opposed to a blackberry where the stem comes off the bush with the fruit.
