Thompson Launches New Way to Honor Its Nurses

UR Medicine Thompson Health recently launched a new program to honor its nurses: The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses®, part of the DAISY Foundation’s mission to recognize the extraordinary, compassionate care provided every day.

A not-for-profit organization, the DAISY Foundation was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. He died at the age of 33 in 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon autoimmune disease. His family was inspired by the care he’d received and wanted to find a way of thanking nurses. DAISY is an acronym for diseases attacking the immune system.

Thompson nurses – from throughout the health system and not just its hospital – may be nominated for a DAISY award by patients, families and colleagues. To nominate a Thompson nurse, visit

. Paper nomination forms are available on each nursing unit, as well.

To learn more about the program, which is currently in over 5,000 healthcare facilities and schools, visit

Kiwanis Club of Canandaigua Receives $25,000 Grant

The grant from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr Legacy Fund for Youth Sports at the Community Foundation will be applied toward the Inclusion in Motion Playground in Canandaigua.

CANANDAIGUA, NY – Kiwanis Club of Canandaigua has received a grant of $25,000 from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr Legacy Fund for Youth Sports at the Community Foundation.

This grant will be applied toward equipment purchased for the Inclusion in Motion Playground in the Town of Canandaigua. The official grand opening of the playground was held in June with over 1,000 attendees. Since then, the response to the playground has been overwhelming with many children and adults using the facilities daily. Thanks to the Ralph C. Wilson Legacy Fund and many other donors, the group is close to the goal of raising the funds needed to complete the project

In the fall, the final phase of the project will be the building of a pavilion, though that pavilion will be much more than just a “building.” It will include family bathrooms, inclusive picnic tables and seating area, a concession stand, and a large common area serving as a transitional space between the drop-off area and the playground. The pavilion will hold a universal design certification plaque, a charging station for power wheelchairs and communication devices, and a tactile map to orient visitors upon arrival.

“We have taken a design approach that goes beyond minimum accessibility compliance,” said Kiwanis Club of Canandaigua President-Elect Pam Metting. “By incorporating Universal Design strategies into every aspect of the project, we will create an enhanced experience for all playground visitors.”

When the entire project is completed, it will become the first isUD Universally Designed and Certified playground in the country. This will complete the dream of having a place where everyone can play together regardless of ability and will also support Kiwanis Club of Canandaigua’s mission of serving the children of the world.

To learn more, visit CanandaiguaKiwanis.org.

Fox Run Vineyards, one of the most prominent wineries in the Finger Lakes, has announced the appointment of Craig Hosbach as its new head winemaker effective September 1. Hosbach, 44, succeeds long-time winemaker Peter Bell, who is retiring after 27 years with the company.

Hosbach, a native of New Jersey, was most recently the winemaker at Hunt Country Vineyards in Branchport, where he received many scores of 90 and above from major wine magazines. He will join assistant winemaker Ashley McCaffery and their staff as the 2022 vintage commences. Bell will stay on in an advisory role.

Join us for the Stars of Seneca class on Sunday, August 28th and learn about Seneca — the largest of the Finger Lakes, hosting more than 50 beautiful vineyards that stretch for hundreds of acres of sloping hills that surround the lake. The combination of its depth and sloping hillsides create a perfect environment for growing grapes and creating delicious wines. NYK Beverage University Instructor, Bruce Smoller, will take you on a wine journey around the region's deepest lake as you sample five wines alongside a cheese plate. 🍷"#tasteny #iloveny #flxwine #senecalake #senecalakewine #fingerlakes #nywine #geneva #watkinsglen

First Date Conversation Topics

Whether you met online or introduced by friends, a face-to-face first date can be daunting. It also doesn’t matter if you are newly single or been this way all your life or for a significant period of time. Expect to be frazzled. One of the most difficult parts is conversation. Read More.

Mulch

As summer wanes, it is a little cooler to work in our flower beds and we begin the preparation for fall and winter. This often includes adding a layer of mulch. Read More.

Bell Peppers

Bell peppers are similar to tomatoes in that they are a fruit but you sure wouldn’t want them on your ice cream. In fact, they are related to chili peppers (duh!), tomatoes, and breadfruit. They are popular raw as additions to salads or cooked included in a medley for a side or otherwise. They are primarily water and carbs but offer a fair amount of fiber. They are good sources of antioxidants that are associated with health benefits as well as eye health and reduced risk of anemia. Read More.
