Stroke Support Group Meets Sept. 2, via Zoom

A representative of Bridges for Brain Injury, Inc., will be the guest speaker at the Thursday, Sept. 2, meeting of the regional Stroke Support Group hosted by UR Medicine Thompson Health.

The meeting will be held at 1 p.m., via Zoom, and will feature Tiffany Joubert, director of wildlife education and development for Bridges for Brain Injury, Inc. The nonprofit organization serves a variety of individuals – including those who have experienced a stroke – and has a mission “to guide individuals with a traumatic brain injury and physical disabilities and their families, by ‘bridging the gap’ between surviving and living lives of independence with dignity and hope.”

Thompson’s monthly support group is open to individuals who have experienced a stroke, as well as their loved ones and caregivers. The group facilitator is stroke-certified registered nurse Sarah Gallagher, the stroke coordinator at F.F. Thompson Hospital. To sign up for the Sept. 2 meeting, email

Smith Urges Public to Get Vaccinated

A number of UR Medicine Thompson Health doctors are appearing in a series of videos urging community members to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

The fourth video features Dr. Robert L. Smith of Finger Lakes Family Care. Dr. Smith, who is also the chief of the Department of Outpatient Medicine for Thompson, explains how the vaccine works.

Physical vs Occupational Therapy

After injuries, surgeries, and accidents a lot of emphasis is placed on rehabilitative care. Its goal is to improve your condition or at least prevent its getting worse. Some of the caregivers you may encounter include physical therapists and occupational therapists. These two areas on the surface seem redundant. It is true they have some similarities, but they are also different in some ways.

Late Summer Gardening

Here we are in mid to late August. Landscapes can become rather drab with perennials having spent their blooms. Reversed Seared Pork Tenderloin

Grilling a pork tenderloin should be easy but all too often it comes off dry. If you cook it indoors a good way to keep it juicy is to braise it, but that sounds impossible on your outdoor grill. Besides, the reason you want to cook outdoors is to keep the heat out of the kitchen and, well, for the fun of outdoor cookery. It is nice to have that smokey taste and crisp exterior.
