Nurse Wins Thompson’s DAISY Award

Registered nurse Samantha Peters of floor 3 East at F.F. Thompson Hospital is the latest recipient of The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses from UR Medicine Thompson Health.

Peters, of Prattsburgh in Steuben County, was surprised with her award at work. She was nominated by a Fairport woman who spent three weeks at Thompson earlier this year and called Peters “a true gem.”

“She treats me like I’m her mother. She has such a tenderness and is very humble,” the woman wrote, adding, “I feel her gentle spirit has made such a difference in my wellness.”

The patient and her husband were both on hand to see Peters receive her award from hospital administrators and nursing leaders.

Peters was presented with a certificate, a pin, and a hand-carved sculpture called

A Healer’s Touch

. As a DAISY recipient, she is also eligible for scholarships, discounts on certifications, and medical mission grants from The DAISY Foundation. She is the fourth recipient of Thompson’s quarterly DAISY award, which is part of a nationwide nurse recognition program.

The Finger Lakes Wine Alliance, in partnership with the Wine Trails of Keuka, Seneca and Cayuga Lakes, Finger Lakes Wine Country, and the New York Wine and Grape Foundation, invite you to celebrate the third annual FINGER LAKES WINE MONTH!

The organizations continue to partner together, leading the recognition and celebration of the unforgettable Finger Lakes wine region. Throughout August, wineries will offer specialty tastings and unique experiences, wine dinners, and more. Regional businesses are joining in for 2023 with their own classes, seminars, special offerings and discounted promotions highlighting Finger Lakes wine.

“Continuing the celebration of our region through the collaboration of our organizations exemplifies what Finger Lakes wine is all about,” says Kyle Pallischeck, Executive Director of the Finger Lakes Wine Alliance. “Not only are we celebrating the high caliber of wine produced in the region, but the community that champions producers efforts only adds to the region’s overall success.” Christina Oldroyd, Vice President of Brand Development at Finger Lakes Wine Country agrees; “Three years in a row we’ve celebrated the hard work put in by everyone in the wine industry, and taken a moment to recognize the importance of the wine industry to the region as a whole.”

Participating wineries will be easily identified by flying a FINGER LAKES WINE MONTH flag for the entire month of August. Finger Lakes Wine Month themed merchandise, specials, promotions, and events planned for the month can be found online at www.flxwinemonth.com, shared on social media by the participating organizations and wineries, and with the hashtag #flxwinemonth.

August Birthstone

August is another of those months that has three stones designated for those born that month, peridot, spinel, and sardonyx. Read More.

Chronic Hip Tightness

Probably everyone would like to have a tight tush, but tightness in the hip joints can prevent activities that we enjoy or just ordinary acts around the house. The acetabulofemoral joint (its real name) is between the head of the femur and pelvis. It supports the weight of the body when standing or moving. It is a critical joint that can take a lot of punishment if we are not careful. Read more.

Recipes with Zucchini

If the squash bugs don’t get them, zucchini is coming into season in your home gardens and farmers’ markets. Look for firm, heavy vegetables with a smooth, dark skin. They lend themselves to a variety of cooking options including grilled, sauted, or raw. Cut a zucchini longwise, scrape the seeds, and use the “boat” to hold mac and cheese, tuna or chicken salad, or ground beef mixture (this one you need to cook). Read More.
