‘Live Well, Be Well’ Series Starts January 4

The Wellness Department from UR Medicine Thompson Health is conducting a free, six-week workshop called “Live Well, Be Well: Take Charge of Your Health,” focusing on a researched-based chronic disease self-management program developed by Stanford University.

Beginning January 4, the class will meet from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Wednesday – through February 8 –  at the Ontario County Safety Training Center, 2914 County Road 48 in Hopewell. It is for anyone with a chronic health condition or anyone who is a caregiver for someone with a chronic health condition including but not limited to arthritis, asthma, diabetes, emphysema, heart disease, lung disease, or Parkinson’s.

Participants will learn how to build a more effective relationship with their doctors; how to communicate with family and friends about their condition; eating tips to help them feel better; how to manage medications; how to set and achieve goals; and how to deal with pain, frustration, isolation, and lack of energy. In addition, participants will explore developing an exercise routine.

Class size is limited. To register or for more information, call Amanda Reynolds at 585-396-6589 or email

Downtown Canandaigua is please to be hosting TUBAChristmas!

SATURDAY AT 2:30 PM – 5 PM

2022 is the 48th anniversary for TUBACHRISTMAS concerts/events which are presented throughout the world. TUBACHRISTMAS was conceived in 1974 by Harvey Phillips as a tribute to his teacher and mentor William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day, 1902. Through the legendary William J. Bell we reflect on our heritage and honor all great artists/teachers whose legacy has given us high performance standards, well structured pedagogy, professional integrity, personal values and a camaraderie envied by all other instrumentalists.

The first TUBACHRISTMAS was conducted by Paul Lavalle in New York City's Rockefeller Plaza Ice Rink on Sunday, December 22, 1974. Traditional Christmas music performed at the first TUBACHRISTMAS was arranged by American composer Alec Wilder who ironically died on Christmas Eve, 1980. Wilder composed many solo and ensemble compositions for tuba and euphonium. He was a loyal supporter of every effort to improve the literature and public image of our chosen instruments. Through Alec Wilder we express our respect and gratitude to all composers who continue to embrace our instruments with their compositions and contribute to the ever growing solo and ensemble repertoire for tuba and euphonium

GUEST APPEARANCE: Delicious wines you can feel good about drinking and gifting this holiday season

🌐

fltimes.com

Shopping local is an important part of Finger Lakes culture. Here are some reasons why your purchase of local wine this holiday season is especially important, as we strive to bolster the regional economy and protect the environment:

Trickle-down effect

It’s a well-cited statistic that 68 cents of every dollar you spend at a local business stays in the community (vs. about 40 cents spent at a national chain). For most farm wineries like ours, that statistic is even higher than 68 cents per dollar.

By law, farm wineries’ No. 1 raw material (grapes) must be 100% grown in New York. A strong network of local suppliers allows us to source our glass bottles, labels, tanks and equipment from companies in the Finger Lakes region. Our tasting room sells food items and souvenirs made by local artisans, and even our tasting menus get printed at a small Seneca County print shop.

Historic Finger Lakes Winery Features Fracktivist Film “Blowout: Who’s Next?”

Hemlock Lake, NY- O-Neh-Da Vineyard will remain open for extended hours on Saturday December 3, 2022 for the debut Finger Lakes screening of the film “BLOWOUT: Who’s Next? Dispatches from the Frontlines of Frackland” (www.blowoutthemovie.com). The Tasting Room will open for regular wine tastings and holiday shopping at Noon. Extended hours will be from 6 – 9 pm for the film screening and Discussion with the Film Director.

Directed by Hope Forpeace, and starring among other victims of the fossil fuel extraction industry Dimock’s own Ray Kemble, the film exposes the ongoing catastrophes and destruction wrought on local people who are unfortunate to live and work near fossil fuel extraction operations. James Cromwell provides narration for the film and has personal experience in the Hudson Valley of New York resisting fossil fuel extraction projects.

AK Productions (akproductions.tv) of Santa Cruz, CA produced and released the film in the fall of 2017. Directed by Hope Forpeace ([email protected]), the film chronicles the compelling dramas of ordinary people downfield from frack sites who continue to endure great tragedy. Her work can be seen on YouTube @HopeForPeaceNow.

This special Director’s Screening at O-Neh-Da Vineyard is open to the general public and provides a rare opportunity to interact in person with the film director and a battle-tested fracktivist, Ray Kemble. Following the screening, Hope and Ray will be available for questions and discussion on the film and ongoing issues related to their personal experiences.

Premium Finger Lakes wine, wine slushies, OSB Ciderworks cider, many NA Adult beverages, grilled sandwiches, soups and more will be available for purchase throughout the film screening. This is a 21-and-over event and there is a $5 cover charge to help offset operating expenses of the film series.

O-Neh-Da Vineyard is “America’s oldest premium winery you never heard of,” celebrating 150 years since founding in 1872 by abolitionist Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid. During the fight to make New York State “Frack-Free,” Will Ouweleen, Vintner for O-Neh-Da Vineyard released a limited series of premium Finger Lakes wines entitled “No Frackin’ Way Red,” “No Frackin’ Way White,” and “No Frackin’ Way Blush” which he sent to then-Governor Cuomo, days before the Fracking Ban was announced by the Cuomo Administration. Ouweleen and 25 other Finger Lakes wineries converted operation in 2015 to 100% solar-power, winning the “Solar Champion of America” award for the region.

For more information on the event please contact Will Ouweleen, Vintner at 585.734.7324 and email [email protected]. For background information on O-Neh-Da Vineyard and associated brands, please visit PureWineOnline.com

Choosing a Live Tree

There is nothing like the scent and ambiance of a non-artificial Christmas tree for the holidays. Choosing the best one in your budget can be easier if you keep some things in mind. If you read last week's article, a couple of these items will sound familiar. Read More.

Why People Hate Fruitcake

The answer is: Comedians have been telling us so for decades. It is a variation of “my wife is such a bad cook”. In reality there are several reasons why: (1) It is dense and heavy; (2) It is cloyingly sweet; (3) Way too boozy. Read More.

Signature Holiday Punches

The holidays are a time for celebrating and enjoying company. No, it doesn’t need to be alcoholic, but sometimes it is really nice! Punches are easy to prepare in advance and keep in a pitcher in the fridge and slow cookers are great for sangria or mulled wines or ciders. Read More.
