Masks Required at Thompson

While New York State ended its mask mandate in clinical care facilities as of Feb. 13, 2023, state and federal regulations still require health systems to develop specific policies related to masking and infection prevention.

Research has proven universal masking in clinical care areas reduces the spread of infectious diseases among patients, long-term care residents, and staff. Therefore, UR Medicine Thompson Health still requires the use of masks in clinical and patient-facing environments. Please take note of and adhere to signage posted in areas throughout the health system.

Thompson thanks community members for their patience and their cooperation in promoting a healing environment.

Raise a glass while we raise funds for our beloved Smith Opera House.

Admission fee includes wine and inventive light bites from local purveyors.

A Sparkling Night at the Smith is a new fundraising event that will team together the splendor of the Smith Opera House with the dynamism of the Finger Lakes Wine Region for a fun and inventive Gala Evening. Taking guests back in time to a 1920s Masquerade Party, the evening will feature six leading Finger Lakes wineries pouring samples of their best sparkling wines, period-appropriate music, and even vintage champagne coupes to drink from as attendees circle throughout the building. This will be a winter night where all the stars come out in The Smith’s ceiling and beyond.

ARTICLE

Will Paul Hobbs be the Rocket that launches New York’s Finger Lakes region?

Every under-recognized fine wine region needs a high-profile producer to be a locomotive to pull it onto the world’s stage. With his new venture, Hillick and Hobbs, named after his parents, Joan Hillick and Edward Hobbs, Paul Hobbs just might do it for New York’s Finger Lakes. Robert Mondavi did it for California in the 1970s. At about the same time, Angelo Gaja drew attention to Piedmont and Piero Antinori’s work shined a bright light on Tuscany. The Drouhin family did it for Oregon in the 1980s.

Vertigo

Vertigo is more than just a dizzy spell.  It is intense and can be a frightening experience.  It presents as extreme wooziness, everything is spinning or you are spinning and out of control.  It can also feel as though you are being pulled in one direction or are tilting.  It can include nausea and vomiting, sweating, ringing in the ears, headache, and abnormal eye movements.  If it lasts more than a few minutes, be sure to seek help. Read More.

Violets and Primroses

We can all probably agree that there are not many plants that are willing to poke their heads through the snow or brave the cold during the winter.  However, if you wander through some forest areas you can see the purple heads of wild violets or primroses.  This is probably one of the reasons they are considered the designated flowers for those born in February. Read more.

Carrots for Dessert

Carrots are root vegetables, generally orange but can also be colored purple, black, red, white, and yellow.  All carrots started from wild carrots native to Europe and Asia.  Different color varieties will have its own taste.  White are more sweet with a somewhat grainy or apple-like texture but purple will seem more peppery and tend toward woodiness.  The larger the carrot, the less tender and late season carrots can be really rather tough. Read More.
