Thompson Receives 2022 Women’s Choice Award®

F.F. Thompson Hospital was recently named one of America’s Best Hospitals for Minimally Invasive Surgery by the Women’s Choice Award

. This signifies that Thompson, an affiliate of UR Medicine, is in the top 6 percent of 4,728 hospitals reviewed, meeting the highest standards for surgical safety/quality of care and having some of the lowest rates of surgical infections and complications in the nation.

Minimally invasive surgery has become the standard of care for many surgical procedures as a safer and more effective option to open surgery, minimizing risks by significantly reducing the size of incisions. Benefits include shorter hospital stays, fewer complications and faster recovery as well as reduced pain, scarring and costs.

Thompson has received this latest distinction by meeting the following criteria:

The hospital is listed by the American Hospital Directory as providing robotic surgery and is designated by the Surgical Review Corporation as a Center of Excellence for Robotic Surgery.
The hospital has a patient recommendation rating of 72 percent or more (i.e. higher than the national average) from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) survey.

Gleason Joins OB-GYN Practice

Family Nurse Practitioner Cassandra Gleason recently joined the OB-GYN practice of F.F. Thompson Hospital’s Canandaigua Medical Group.

Prior to joining Thompson, Gleason was a family nurse practitioner in pediatric surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital and, prior to that, at two primary care locations in Wayne County. She had previously worked as a nurse in the Operating Room at Strong. Certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Gleason has a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Nazareth College and obtained her master’s through the Family Nurse Practitioner Program at St. John Fisher College, where she graduated magna cum laude. She is a resident of Farmington.

The Cool Climate Of Finger Lakes: Ravines Wine Cellars And The Challenge Of European Grapes

Finger Lakes in the northern part of New York state produces some exciting and delicious wines. It is a cool climate wine region, a fact that poses challenges to wine producers. Traditionally, they only used grapes from the American grapevine Vitis labrusca, but that changed in the 1960s. You can actually grow the European grapevine Vitis vinifera in the Finger Lakes, but you have to choose your grape varieties carefully. (Vitis vinifera is the grape variety family that includes all famous varieties – or varietals – like, for instance chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon.)

Uses for the Microwave

When microwave ovens were first introduced, they were advertised as being able to prepare an entire meal in minutes instead of hours. However, consumers realized that meats will cook thoroughly but not present with the nice, brown color we are used to. Today we primarily use microwaves to reheat food, boil water, or melt butter. Fruit Tree Pruning

Fruit trees can be pruned from the middle of February through March. Just be sure the wood is not frozen. Select a decent day when you won’t get frostbite and the ground is stable. Read More.
