Scholarship Applications Due to Thompson Health Guild Soon

Each year, the Thompson Health Guild awards up to five scholarships – each for $2,000 – to area high school seniors who are pursuing careers in health care.

Scholarship recipients must be registered in a human health-related field and must successfully complete their first college semester with the intent to study the second semester in a human health-related field. Eligible districts for the scholarship – based on UR Medicine Thompson Health's service area – are Bloomfield, Canandaigua, Geneva, Honeoye, Honeoye Falls-Lima, Livonia, Marcus Whitman, Midlakes, Mynderse, Naples, Newark, Palmyra-Macedon, Penn Yan, Red Jacket, Victor, and Waterloo. Online scholarship application forms must be submitted by both the student and the guidance counselor

no later than April 7

.

The Guild, governed by a volunteer board of directors, is the auxiliary for UR Medicine Thompson Health. The funds it raises help the nonprofit health system expand its facilities, purchase needed equipment and offer helpful programs for patients, senior living residents, staff, and community members.

For more information about the Guild or the scholarship opportunity, visit

Thompson Grant Applications due April 15

All local not-for-profit organizations whose programs improve the health and wellness of the community within the service area of UR Medicine Thompson Health are encouraged to apply by April 15 for Mary Clark Thompson Community Health Grants offered by the F.F. Thompson Foundation.

Local philanthropist Mary Clark Thompson founded F.F. Thompson Hospital in 1904, in memory of her husband, Frederick Ferris Thompson. Her spirit of community-minded philanthropy was the motivation behind the creation of the Community Health Grants, with applications accepted annually. These grants enable the Foundation to invest directly in projects and organizations benefiting the health of the community. Grants awarded through a competitive application process range from $500 to $2,500.

For complete applicant guidelines and to apply, visit

. For more information, call the Foundation at 585-396-6155

Raise a glass while we raise funds for our beloved Smith Opera House.

Admission fee includes wine and inventive light bites from local purveyors.

A Sparkling Night at the Smith is a new fundraising event that will team together the splendor of the Smith Opera House with the dynamism of the Finger Lakes Wine Region for a fun and inventive Gala Evening. Taking guests back in time to a 1920s Masquerade Party, the evening will feature six leading Finger Lakes wineries pouring samples of their best sparkling wines, period-appropriate music, and even vintage champagne coupes to drink from as attendees circle throughout the building. This will be a winter night where all the stars come out in The Smith’s ceiling and beyond.

Villa Bellangelo, ideally located on the west side of Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes, celebrated numerous accolades over the course of the last decade, including dozens of 90+ point scores from the top national wine reviewers, and a nod from Wine & Spirits Magazine in 2018, for producing one of the Top 100 Wines in the World. In 2020, a name change to Missick Cellars reflected the family ownership and spirit of this boutique winery.

Make February Fun

After all the hoopla of December and the holidays, January gets us back into a regular pattern of school, work, and ordinary activities.  Then we hit February.  Okay, its got groundhog day which is a silly event, President’s Day which not everyone gets a free day from the office, Super Bowl, and, of course, Black History month.  Even though it only has 28 days (except Leap Year like 2024), it can seem eons long with the gray skies of winter and unpredictable weather. Read more.

Tilapia

Tilapia is a freshwater fish with a mild flavor, cooks quickly, and is affordable.  Native to Africa, this fish is farmed in over 135 countries.  Just be sure to check out the origin of the tilapia you buy at the grocery store, either fresh or frozen, since farming practices will vary around the world. Some countries, like China, have processes that are questionable for health reasons.  Best stick to those sources from the United States, Canada, the Netherlands, Ecuador, and Peru. Read More.
