Thompson Urging Community to Get Involved With Nursing Home Advocacy
Thompson Health is joining with health systems across the state in urging lawmakers to comprehensively reform and rationalize New York’s nursing home Medicaid methodology in the Final 2024-25 Budget. Thompson is also encouraging members of the community to learn more about the issue and become involved.
Despite sharply rising costs, New York’s nursing home Medicaid rates have not been adjusted for inflation since 2007. As a result, according to a federal panel of experts, our nursing home reimbursement is among the worst in the country. On average, New York State’s nursing home Medicaid rates cover only 75% of the cost of care for each Medicaid resident served.
In the face of an $810 million (State share) Medicaid funding gap for the nursing home care provided in New York,
the Governor’s Budget proposes a 10% capital cut to nursing home Medicaid rates, eliminates crucial Vital Access Provider Assurance Program (VAPAP) funds, and demands up to $400 million in additional, unspecified cuts to the long-term care sector.
LeadingAge New York – an organization representing not-for-profit, mission-driven, and public continuing care providers – has created a quick and convenient way to make your voice heard with a message to the governor, lieutenant governor, and other state lawmakers. Please take a moment to show your support for older adults in our community by filling out a brief form via this link -

Cameron and Maren Hosmer on Earning the New York Grape & Wine Foundation’s Lifetime Achievement Award Written by Kathleen Willcox and Robin Shreeves
“I was overwhelmed,” says Cameron Hosmer, about the news of the Jim Trezise Lifetime Achievement Award he and his wife, Maren, received this year from the New York Wine & Grape Foundation. “What a thrill! It was truly an honor to be recognized by our industry.”
Maren was equally taken by surprise and delighted.
“I couldn’t believe it,” she recalls. “It really was completely unexpected.”
That kind of joyful, calm humility has guided the pair through their lives and careers. It’s also been foundational in the slow, steady rise of Hosmer Estate Winery in Ovid, which just happened to coincide with the ascent of the Finger Lakes wine industry writ large.
The New York Wine & Grape Foundation created the Unity Awards in 1990 to recognize, encourage and celebrate cooperation among grape growers, wineries, researchers, retailers and other members of the growing Empire State wine industry.
Ten awards are given out every year. The Jim Trezise Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes people who have demonstrated a lifelong commitment to the New York wine and grape industry, and in the process, have made impactful contributions that advance the industry. Trezise, of course, is a legend in the industry. He was named executive director of the New York State Wine Growers Association in 1982 and created the New York Wine & Grape Foundation a few years later in 1985; today, he serves as president of WineAmerica.

Planning an Oscar Party
On Sunday, March 10, we will again be treated to the annual televized event from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, commonly known as The Oscars. This can be a great excuse for a party for just family members or friends. Since the program is shown on a Sunday night, parents need to be aware of bed times and noise, but especially for adults, it is an excuse to pull out the fancy dress worn on New Year’s Eve and get more value for the money invested in it. The other option would be to designate “creative” dress and see what your friends can concoct from their closets that are theme related. Read More.

Chapped Lips
Winter is the time of year we notice how chapped and cracked our lips become from the dry air, cold temperatures, and wind.
The human body has microscopic glands that support hair follicles and provide oil that serves to moisturize the skin and hair. However, lips don’t have these sebaceous glands. So, that is why they tend to dry out faster than other parts of the body. Read more.

Panini Sandwiches
Remember that panini press that you just had to have a few years back? Well, dust it off for some fancy sandwiches for lunch or dinner. Add a salad, cup of soup, or potato chips and you are set. Read More.
