Thompson Emphasizing Importance of Vaccine for Pregnant Women

With growing concern about the risks of COVID-19 during pregnancy, Thompson Health is continuing to share information with the community in the hopes that more pregnant women and women who may become pregnant will get vaccinated.

A recent study found an increased risk of premature births, stillbirths and newborn deaths in women infected with SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) 28 days before their due date. Most women with COVID-19 related complications were more likely to be unvaccinated, the study found.

Dr. Catherine Cantwell of the OB-GYN practice at Thompson’s Canandaigua Medical Group made the following appeal regarding the vaccine last summer and Thompson wants to again share her message in light of the latest findings:

It takes a certain kind of person to appreciate the days when the temperature drops into the teens or below.

Count the ice wine makers in the Finger Lakes and other regions of Upstate New York among them. These are the days when hardy winery crews get out into the vineyards to pick frozen grapes right off the vine.

The ideal conditions for harvesting ice wine grapes call for temperatures between 12 and 18 degrees, said Dave Breeden, winemaker at Sheldrake Point Winery on Cayuga Lake. That means it’s often done in dark, pre-dawn hours.

Overcoming Anxiety over Going to the Gym

Many people look forward to that first cup of coffee in the morning to get a nice jolt to start their day right. In addition to tasting pretty darn good and giving you a boost of energy, there have been research studies that show there are actually health benefits to coffee.

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year, the year of the Tiger, begins February 2, 2022. The Jade Emperor, a very important deity, invited all the animals in the world to take part in a race to decide the order of the zodiacs. The tiger was one of the animals. The feline, when climbing from the water, felt it was in first place because of its speed and vigor. However, it was amazed to find out that the ox with its diligence was ahead of him/her. Further, the ox was bested by the cunning rat. Or so the story goes.

Chow Mein Casserole

Chow mein means fried noodles. They came to us in the United States from the Chinese who emigrated in the mid-19th Century, primarily to work on the transcontinental railway but also filled in other positions. Lo mein noodles are generally cooked while chow mein are served crispy, although American regional differences exist. Read More.
