Scholarship Applications Due to Thompson Health Guild Soon

Each year, the Thompson Health Guild awards up to five scholarships – each for $2,000 – to area high school seniors who are pursuing careers in health care.

Scholarship recipients must be registered in a human health-related field and must successfully complete their first college semester with the intent to study the second semester in a human health-related field. Eligible districts for the scholarship – based on UR Medicine Thompson Health's service area – are Bloomfield, Canandaigua, Geneva, Honeoye, Honeoye Falls-Lima, Livonia, Marcus Whitman, Midlakes, Mynderse, Naples, Newark, Palmyra-Macedon, Penn Yan, Red Jacket, Victor, and Waterloo. Online scholarship application forms must be submitted by both the student and the guidance counselor

no later than April 7

.

The Guild, governed by a volunteer board of directors, is the auxiliary for UR Medicine Thompson Health. The funds it raises help the nonprofit health system expand its facilities, purchase needed equipment and offer helpful programs for patients, senior living residents, staff, and community members.

Six

Chosen for Thompson Health’s Service Excellence Awards

UR Medicine Thompson Health recently named six of its associates as first-quarter 2023 Service Excellence Award winners. Chosen for the honor by the health system’s Service Excellence Team (SET) were:

  • Thomas Bonfiglio of Pittsford, Quality Improvement Coordinator

  • Christine Mullen of Canandaigua, Clinical Secretary in Canandaigua Medical Group Pediatrics

  • Timothy Noone of Ontario, Special Procedures Technician in Diagnostic Imaging

  • Martha Peck of Shortsville, Sonographer in Ultrasound

  • Audry Wasnock of Farmington, Registered Nurse in Diagnostic Imaging

  • Olivia Wethington of Farmington,  MRI Technologist in MRI

The Service Excellence Award acknowledges Thompson associates who consistently deliver exceptional service. The SET selects award recipients quarterly, after reviewing system leaders’ submissions of compliments from patients, families, and coworkers.

ARTICLE

A question I often get at work and in my personal life is: “What is your favorite wine?” It’s a question that, for whatever reason, puts a lot of pressure on me. To choose just one always feels unfair, as I will inevitably have to exclude dozens of other favorites in the process. The dilemma is that I often choose my wines according to the time of year. Now that it’s February, the dark month, I generally look to the red wines in my collection. I may open an older bottle, something I’ve been patiently holding onto for years, and invite members of my inner circle over to try it and wax oenophilic. Having a dedicated group of wine friends is a good thing overall, but a necessity in the winter. On these spontaneous occasions, I like to have a fortified wine on hand or an ice wine to sip around the table, extending the evening. Read more

February Birthstone

February’s gemstone is the deep purple quartz we call amethyst.  Favored by royals throughout Europe and Asia, its mystical powers include personal fortitude and strength.  While the purple can vary from violet to lilac, when heated it will morph into a dark yellow or orange. Read More.

Starting a Garden from Seed

February is a good month to start your garden. Although the outdoor soil is frozen solid, turn to the indoors and start your plants from seed. If you read an article last month, you will know that you need to back time the interval necessary for your plants to be hearty enough to endure the exterior weather. In other words, strong enough to transplant outdoors. The longer it takes for them to reach a size that will survive after the latest frost (usually late April or May), the earlier you need to start. Valentine's Day Menu

Valentine’s Day is coming and there are many wonderful restaurants to choose from for your special day or night.  However, for various reasons some people prefer to dine at home.  If you are part of that latter group, here are some ideas for your meal.  Just because you are not a gourmet chef, don’t despair.  Check with your local grocery store for take away meal options or pre-prepared options that you can easily heat and serve. Read More.
