Thompson’s ‘Live Well, Be Well’ Series Starts February 7

The Wellness Department at UR Medicine Thompson Health is conducting a free, six-week workshop called “Live Well, Be Well: Take Charge of Your Health,” focusing on a researched-based chronic disease self-management program developed by Stanford University.Beginning February 7 and continuing through March 14, the class will meet from 1:30 to 4 p.m. every Tuesday at Eighty Parrish Street Apartments, located at 80 Parrish Street in Canandaigua. It is for anyone with a chronic health condition or a caregiver for someone with a chronic health condition including but not limited to arthritis, asthma, diabetes, emphysema, heart disease, lung disease, or Parkinson’s.

Participants will learn how to build a more effective relationship with their doctor; how to communicate with family and friends about their condition; how to manage medications; how to set and achieve goals; how to deal with pain, frustration, isolation, and lack of energy, as well as eating tips to help them feel better. In addition, participants will explore developing an exercise routine.

Thompson Job Fair Set for Tuesday, January 24

UR Medicine Thompson Health is hosting a job fair on Tuesday, January 4, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Constellation Center for Health and Healing at F.F. Thompson Hospital, 350 Parrish Street in Canandaigua.

Onsite interviews with hiring managers will take place during the event.

Current openings include RNs, LPNs, patient care technicians, certified nursing assistants, lab technicians, Nutrition Services associates, Environmental Services associates, a clinical secretary and positions in Physician Billing and Radiology, as well as a manager of Patient Registration/Scheduling and a lead material handler.

January Birthstone

The idea of a birthstone comes from a biblical reference in Exodus where Aaron wore a breastplate with 12 different stones each representing a different tribe of Israel.  In Hindu traditions, the Ratna Pariksah shows the relationships between gemstones and dieties.  These nine stones each represent a different celestial force.  Centuries ago in Central Europe the trend began to give birthstone jewelry as a way to celebrate an occasion.  Frequently you can see a grandmother’s necklace, bracelet or other item with stones representing each of her grandchildren. Read More.
