Regional Stroke Support Group Meets Via Zoom April 3

The regional Stroke Support Group hosted by UR Medicine Thompson Health will meet at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 3, via Zoom.

F.F. Thompson Hospital is a New York State Department of Health-designated Stroke Center and has advanced certification from The Joint Commission as an Advanced Primary Stroke Center. The hospital is also a recipient of the American Heart Association/American Stroke.

Association’s Get With The Guidelines

 Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally accepted, research-based guidelines.

Thompson Seeks Help with Advocacy in Albany

As Thompson Health has been sharing via its advocacy efforts in recent months, New York’s Medicaid reimbursement for nursing homes is among the worst in the country. A federal panel of experts analyzing nursing home Medicaid rates and costs nationwide found that New York’s rates covered on average only 76% of the cost of care. As a result, according to an analysis, 85% of not-for-profit homes – including Thompson’s – experience annual operating losses.

These woefully inadequate rates have led to several facilities in our region scaling back on their beds, or even shutting down. It impacts overcrowded hospitals, too, because they have patients who are waiting for nursing home beds but have nowhere to go.

Thompson’s M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center belongs to LeadingAge NY, which represents not-for-profit, mission-driven, and public continuing care providers. LeadingAge prepared a simple way for all of us to make our voices heard in Albany, and Thompson is hopeful you will take part in these crucial advocacy efforts!

Garage Cleaning Tips

Cleaning the garage is never an easy task.  It is amazing how things can get so cluttered and in disarray.  By taking the project in reasonable bites, it can be done.

Live in the real world.  You may or may not get the entire garage into order.  Be grateful for what you can accomplish. If you only do one section or a corner at a time, you have been successful.  It is better than when you began.  Plan on another weekend to work on more. Read More.

Newborn and Siblings

Incorporating a new member into the family can be a challenge.  Even parents who adjusted well to their first born can become overwhelmed with the addition of a new baby.  In addition to the every day arrangements of meals, feedings, bedtimes, possibly monitoring school work, parents' jobs, there are a roller coaster of emotions floating around the home.  One of those could easily be sibling rivalry. Read More.
