Constellation, CMAC to Fund Free Nov. 18 Flu Clinic for Community

Constellation Brands – Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center (CMAC) and Constellation Brands, Inc. are funding a flu clinic on Thursday, Nov. 18, at Gleaners Community Kitchen, located in St. John’s Episcopal Church at 183 N. Main St. in Canandaigua.

Hosted by UR Medicine Thompson Health, the free clinic is for both the uninsured and underinsured, ages 9 and up. It will run from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The standard 2021-2022 vaccine provides protection against four flu viruses. There is also a high-dose option, for ages 65 and up, containing additional antigen designed to create a stronger immune response.

For more information on the November 18th free clinic, call 585-924-1510.

Designate a Light at Thompson in Honor or in Memory of a Loved One

This holiday season, the guild’s Tree of Lights will once again be featured prominently in front of UR Medicine Thompson Health’s skilled-nursing facility, the M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center on Parrish Street in Canandaigua.

Each year, community members may sponsor lights on the tree, in memory of or in honor of loved ones. Proceeds benefit the programs and initiatives funded by the guild, which is Thompson’s auxiliary and which had to cancel many of its fundraising events this year.

Lights are a minimum donation of $5 each. Written acknowledgments are sent to those honored or to the families of those memorialized.

To sponsor a light, visit

New York’s Finger Lakes are having a moment. Never before have so many great wines been produced in the region, and it doesn’t seem like the trend will be slowing anytime soon. Driving the revolution are FLX rieslings, which are now of world-class quality and are comparable to anything coming out of Germany or Austria. And behind the improved quality of wines is a new generation of winemakers who are much more open and daring than previous generations.

Tips to Make Thanksgiving Easier

Holidays can be a fun time but also filled with stress.  This is especially true if you are hosting multi-generational gatherings, including in-laws and out-laws, friends, steps, and even sometimes exes.  No matter if you are hosting for the first time or the fifteenth, here are some tips that may make things a bit easier.

History of Happy Hour

November 10 is Happy Hour Day.  Of course, that is a specified time usually at a restaurant that offers discounted drinks.  It actually started as far back as 1914 with the U. S. Navy.  During Prohibition, it was a method of early drinking at someone’s home or a speakeasy before setting out for dinner or the theater…a little surreptitious snort.  Post World War II it became an enticement for the booming economy.  It continues in popularity today. Read More.

Cranberry Relish and Cranberry Biscuits

Cranberries are one of those superfoods because of their high vitamin content and antioxidants.  They are a low shrub (only about 2 to 8 inches high) but send out vines that can be as long as 7 feet.  They  have evergreen type leaves and bloom with pink flowers that are pollinated by bees.  Closely related to blueberries, they grow in the northern areas of the United States in fields with shallow water tables.  They don’t grow in bogs but the field is flooded when the berries are ripe.  Since the berries are quite buoyant, they will float to the top of the water for easier harvesting.
