5 new spots to eat and drink around Keuka Lakein the Finger LakesByTracy SchuhmacherRochester Democrat and Chronicle October is peak time for visitors to the famed Finger Lakes wine region, and each lake has its own vibe and personality.Keuka Lake has a quieter, more rural atmosphere than some of the other neighboring lakes, but it's one of the region's major wine-producing lakes, with historic wineries like Dr. Konstantin Frank and Bully Hill remaining popular destinations. Steep hills surround the narrow, y-shaped lake, making for especially stunning views of foliage.  Read more.

October Birthstone

Autumn brings with it a change in our color palette. We go from the pastels and greens to the glorious yellows, ochres, oranges, reds, and browns. It is, therefore, appropriate that the two birthstones for October reflect those same changing spectrums with opal glistening with every change in light and the tourmaline that relies on its chemical makeup to show its true hue. Read More.

Bone Density Test

Osteoporosis is a degeneration of bone tissue that makes it more fragile and more likely to break. A bone density test measures the amount of calcium and other minerals that are in segments of your bone to determine how strong the bone is and, therefore, the potential damage. It can also detect existing fractures, infections, or other abnormalities. The x-ray will look at spine and hips and sometimes the forearm. This test is used to determine how much, if any, bone tissue is lost and risk of a future break. It will confirm a diagnosis or osteopenia or osteoporosis and help guide treatment options. Read more.

Acorn Squash

Acorn squash is considered one of the winter vegetables available beginning in October. They are also known as pepper squash. They have a dark green rind generally with yellow or orange splotches and distinctive longitudinal ridges. They have a sweet, orange colored flesh that has a somewhat buttery taste and will pair well with either sweet or savory. It is high in fiber and minerals. When shopping for squash look for hard shells, tough rinds, and a heavy feel. Avoid those with soft spots or a detached stem. Read More.
