CANANDAIGUA – “Clucks for Bucks,” an annual chicken barbecue benefitting palliative care, returns on Thursday, Sept. 26, in the parking lot of Crosswinds Wesleyan Church, 3360 Middle Cheshire Road in Canandaigua.

The drive-thru event will begin at 3 p.m. and continue until the chicken is sold out. Prepared by Grove Barbecue Company of Naples, meals will include a marinated half chicken, salt potatoes, coleslaw, and a dinner roll.

The cost is $14 per person, cash or check only. Proceeds benefit the Palliative Care Program at the 178-bed M.M. Ewing Continuing Care Center, the skilled-nursing facility operated by UR Medicine Thompson Health on Parrish Street in Canandaigua.

Thompson Community Flu Clinics Start Sept. 26

CANANDAIGUA – UR Medicine Thompson Health has scheduled five community flu clinics in the region.

Administered to those 9 and older at these clinics, the standard 2024-2025 vaccine provides protection against three flu virus strains. There also is a high-dose flu vaccine for those 65 and older. This contains additional antigen designed to create a stronger immune response for the recipient.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Farmington Town Hall, 1000 County Road 8, Thursday, Sept. 26, 3-6 p.m.

  • Shortsville Fire Department, 5 Sheldon St., Wednesday, Oct. 2, 3-5:30 p.m.

  • Newark Urgent Care, Unit 11 at 800 West Miller St., Friday, Oct. 11, 3-7 p.m.

  • Canandaigua Urgent Care, 699 S. Main St., Tuesday, Oct. 15, 3-7 p.m.

  • Farmington Urgent Care, 1160 Corporate Drive, Wednesday, Oct. 16, 3-7 p.m.

The flu shots are free to patients with insurance (patients must present an insurance card at the time of the visit). The self-pay cost for those without insurance is $45, and $80 for the high-dose vaccine (cash, check, MasterCard or Visa).

Uses for Flat Bedsheets

Many people are forsaking a top sheet and just sleeping with a duvet as a cover.  Other people find that the fitted sheet wears out faster than the other components of a set because the elastic doesn’t hold up or other issues.  Whichever, that often leaves us with pillowcases and a top sheet.  Pillowcases are easily transferred from one set to another, but what to do with a top sheet?  The most obvious answer is to use it as a drop cloth during a painting project.  It can also be used to cover a riding mower or outdoor furniture during the off season.  Here are some ideas to mull over.  Note that some of these ideas will need the use of a sewing machine. Read More.

Quinoa

Quinoa is a seed that is produced in the area around the Andes Mountains in South America.  Even though it is actually a seed, we classify it as a grain and can be used as a side dish to an entree, in a bowl, or even a soup. Read more.
