Thompson Better Breathers Meet Oct. 13

UR Medicine Thompson Health is hosting a support group on Friday, Oct. 13, for individuals with lung disease or breathing difficulties who are looking to improve their quality of life.

Called Thompson Better Breathers, the group will focus on discussion, education, and behavioral modifications, with Thompson Health Respiratory Therapist Gerald Dilgard facilitating.

The Oct. 13 meeting will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the George M. Ewing Jr. Conference Room on the ground floor of the Constellation Center for Health and Healing, located at the back of Thompson Hospital. Enter the campus via The Thompson Way, a private drive off West Street, to the right of The Eye Care Center. There is no charge to attend.

For more information on this support group, call 585-396-6220.

Don Potter Concert to Benefit Thompson Health Fund

Singer and guitar player Don Potter will perform at the Fort Hill Performing Arts Center in Canandaigua on Friday, Oct. 13, to raise funds for UR Medicine Thompson Health as the nonprofit organization helps its associates advance their careers.

Don Potter

A 2013 inductee into the Rochester Music Hall of Fame, Potter first gained a following in the Rochester area in the late 1960s as a member of the Show Stoppers, later forming a duo with Bat McGrath and collaborating with Chuck Mangione. Following two solo albums, Potter relocated to Nashville. There, he worked as a session player and helped launch The Judds, with the mother/daughter duo gaining fans worldwide. During his career, Potter has also worked with the likes of Elton John, Kenny Chesney, Lyle Lovett, and more.

Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. concert are $65 (orchestra) and $85 (mezzanine), with Wegmans as the Presenting Sponsor.

Proceeds benefit Thompson’s Healthcare Education Fund, which sponsors stipends for Thompson associates who are pursuing higher education, making it possible for them to work part-time while attending school. The stipends help cover lost wages, childcare, and/or transportation in order to minimize challenges and help the associates gain the skills necessary to raise their income levels or even lift themselves out of poverty. In addition to helping stabilize Thompson’s workforce, the initiative means Thompson’s patients and long-term care residents receive care from highly-skilled individuals who are invested in the community health system.

Seating for the Oct. 13 benefit concert is limited. To purchase tickets, visit

or the website for the Fort Hill Performing Arts Center,

. For more information, call the F.F. Thompson Foundation at 585-396-6155.

Time to Shine: A Second Honeymoon for Hybrid GrapesBy Kathleen Willcox from Wine Industry Advisor The last few years have not been kind to vitis vinifera. Damage from wildfires, hail storms, late and then early frosts, heat waves, drought and excess rain have cost the industry billions of dollars in lost sales. (If that number seems high, consider that France lost an estimated $2 billion in wine sales in 2022 due to an historically low harvest blamed on extreme weather).. Read more.

September Birth Flowers

September is one of those transitional months. The autumnal equinox occurs this month, which means for the rest of the year there will be more dark hours than daylight. There are still a lot of blooming plants to enjoy, though. Two of them represent those born in September: aster and morning glory. Read More.

Retail Therapy

Lots of people enjoy shopping, whether it is on a mission to purchase a specific item or just to check out what is new on the racks. This includes price comparisons from one store to another. Online browsing is the same but in the comfort of your sweats with an unending supply of your favorite beverage at your side. Read more.

Spaghetti Dishes

It’s hard to find a kid that doesn’t enjoy that great slurp of a spaghetti noodle. It is widely associated with Italy and its name comes from the Italian word for string or cord. It is the simplest pasta shape to produce. If you are tired of the same old meat balls or sauce, here are a few alternatives. Read More.
